In the epic, Gilgamesh is a demigod of superhuman strength who befriends the wild man Enkidu. Together, they embark on many journeys, most famously defeating Humbaba (Sumerian: Huwawa) and the Bull of Heaven , who is sent to attack them by Ishtar (Sumerian: Inanna) after Gilgamesh rejects her offer for him to become her consort.
According to legendary accounts, Gilgamesh was the son of the goddess Ninsun and of either Lugalbanda, a king of Uruk, or of a high priest of the district of Kullab. The fact that his mother was a goddess and his father, a mortal, suggests than Gilgamesh was a demigod.

Why then is Gilgamesh considered to be one-third human and two-third god when he is the offspring of a god (dess) and a human?
