In 1989/1990, he and partner actor Tim Matheson took over National Lampoon, with Grodnik becoming the company's chairman and CEO. Known for his production work on the Victor Salva-directed film Powder and on the Emilio Estevezfeature Bobby, he founded the Mass Hysteria Entertainment movie production company and also served as CEO of National Lampoon, Incorporated.
Early in his career, he worked as a writer and executive producer on such 1980s television programs as Goldie and the Bears and Northstar.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, he later settled in Los Angeles, California. His marriage to Nancy Grodnik resulted in one child.
