Back at a tennis court in Los Angeles, Maria picks up television actor Johnny Waters, who takes her home and watches his show as foreplay to sex. Afterward, Maria speeds off in Johnny's car, and when Johnny reports the car stolen, the police stop her and, finding drugs in the car, arrest her.

Neglected by her husband, Maria is engaged in a series of one-night stands and becomes pregnant. Her husband divorces her, and she has an illegal abortion. Maria's only friend is B.Z., a homosexual movie producer. World weary, he tells Maria that he has discovered the meaning of life is nothing.
Play It as It Lays is a 1970 novel by American writer Joan Didion. Time magazine included the novel in its list of the "100 Best English-Language Novels from 1923 to 2005". The novel has been credited for helping define modern American Fiction and has been described as an "instant classic".
