About 1669 he isolated from urine a white, waxy material and named it phosphorus (“light bearer”), because it glowed in the dark. Although Brand kept his process a secret, phosphorus was discovered independently in 1680 by an English chemist, Robert Boyle.

Hennig Brand - Biography, Facts and Pictures. Lived c. 1630 – c. 1710. Hennig Brand discovered phosphorus, becoming the first named person in history to discover a chemical element. Beginnings. Little is known about Brand’s life. Born in about 1630, he was associated with the German port city of Hamburg.
Foremost among those intrigued was Robert William Boyle, an Anglo-Irish scientist widely regarded as the founder of modern chemistry. Becher had decamped to London to work for Boyle, as had another entrepreneur-scientist from Saxony, Ambrose Godfrey-Hanckwitz, who likely met with Brand in Hamburg before leaving for England in 1680.
