The Republic of Nicaragua v. The United States of America (1986) was a case where the International Court of Justice (ICJ) held that the U.S. had violated international law by supporting the Contras in their rebellion against the Sandinistas and by mining Nicaragua's harbors.
In June 1986 the International Court handed down one of its most important judgments in forty years. It was certainly the most important for the United States. According to some observers, the decision was the best that the Court has delivered, and under difficult circumstances too.
