Meanwhile, iMessages transfer data using the Internet. So you need Wi-Fi or cellular data to send an iMessage, but you can use any cell reception to send a text message.

This can happen if the recipient does not have an internet connection or if the message is being sent to a non-Apple device.
Open the Messages app on your iPhone. In the Messages list, tap the conversation that you want to participate in. Tap the text field, create your message, then tap to send your message. Tip: Find out when a message was sent to you. Drag the message bubble to the left to see timestamps for all messages in the conversation.
