Fuel additives can be beneficial, especially for older Tacomas. Lower-than-recommended octane can cause engine knocking and valve chatter.

While lower octane ratings may be less expensive, they can negatively impact performance and fuel efficiency. Higher octane fuels may offer improved performance, but they are not necessary unless specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Use 91. No need to make your engine constantly compensate for lower octane. But what really matters is using name brand fuels like Shell and Sinclair. Grocery store and bargain club brands aren't worth the cost difference given the poorer mileage and performance.
