The son of Lord Randolph Spencer-Churchill and Jennie (Jerome) Spencer-Churchill (and the younger brother of Winston Churchill), he had a privileged upbringing. He was educated at Harrow, and commissioned a lieutenant in the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars in 1898.

Because of the bad weather of that terrible winter, Winston’s doctors advised against him attending the funeral as Jack was laid to rest in the family plot at St Martin’s Church, Bladon, Oxfordshire.
