  1. Apr 4, 2020 · Cabin In The Woods features a huge variety of monsters inspired by movies and fiction, many of which are unleashed in the movie's climactic "purge" bloodbath. While there are so many creatures its hard to get an exact headcount, below is a list of every monster listed on the whiteboard, followed by the other beasties unleashed during the purge.

    • Fornicus, Lord of Bondage and Pain. A Cenobite in spirit! Fornicus is easily my favorite monster in the movie, and I don’t think I’d be anywhere near as into The Cabin in the Woods without him.
    • The Ancient Ones. They’ll give you a hand, oh ho ho. Maybe it’s a cheat to count the Ancient Ones among the “monsters,” but how could I not include them?
    • Killer Clown! Everybody’s running when the circus come into their town… In a nod to Pennywise from Stephen King’s It, Killer Clown had one of the best moments of the purge.
    • Vine-Covered Bull Demon. …was probably never meant to be seen up close. I have no idea what this guy is supposed to be, but that’s what makes him so interesting.
  2. From creepy creatures lifted from the mind of Guillermo del Toro to a copyright-safe version of a celebrated Cenobite, Cabin in the Woods took aim at every horror trope it could, both for a laugh and to create effective scares.

    • The Dolls. The kind of sinister masked killers you’d find in a movie like The Strangers or The Purge, the Dolls are hardly the heaviest hitters in The Cabin in the Woods’ Monster Squad, but they’re undoubtedly one of the most visually chilling.
    • Dragonbat. Sure, Dragonbat may not be the first monster that springs to mind when you look back on The Cabin in the Woods’ gleefully gruesome final act, but there are few monsters that caused as much carnage as this chiropteran terror.
    • Giant Snake. Boasting one of the highest body counts in the entire movie, the Giant Snake’s horror mileage admittedly varies based on your tolerance for the creature’s real-life counterparts.
    • Zombie Redneck Torture Family. There’s a lot of undeserved hate leveled at The Cabin in the Woods’ central antagonists, the Buckner Family. They may have been the movie’s only monsters for the majority of its runtime, but the argument that they’re the "blandest" creatures in the movie couldn’t be further from the truth.
  3. Apr 13, 2022 · The Monster Mayhem of The Cabin in the Woods Still Thrills. In a brilliant twist on the genre, The Cabin in the Woods gradually reveals that the hapless victims of a zombie onslaught are merely pawns in a mechanised ritual. They are sacrifices made to appease ancient Gods.
