    • Wool. Best for: high-traffic areas, for comfort and a cozy feel. Wool is one of the most commonly used fibers for rugs and also one of the most durable. It's a good choice for a high-traffic area like a living room or dining room because it's resilient, yet it's still incredibly soft and comfortable.
    • Natural Fibers. Best for: to layer under another rug, add texture and a natural, organic look. Natural fiber rugs bring in an organic feel and are a great way to add warmth and texture to a room.
    • Hair-On-Hide. Best for: an accent rug for a small area or to layer over a larger rug. Hair-on-hide rugs are either full-sized animal hides that have an organic, irregular shape or area rugs made up of cut hide pieces stitched together to create a geometric pattern.
    • Cotton. Best for: areas where you frequently change rugs, seasonal rugs. Cotton rugs are soft and comfortable while also being affordable. Cotton is an excellent material choice for a space like an entryway, kitchen or bathroom where you know you'll need to replace the rug pretty often due to high volume of use.
    • 2 pieces should sit the same distance on the rug. Whether you want your rug slightly under your furniture or ALL the way, the concept should apply to at least 2 of your main pieces of furniture (the odd arrangement can accommodate otherwise, but just assume that yours doesn’t, capiche?)
    • Area Rug on carpet. If you’re going to put an area rug over your carpet, you’ll want to find one that is thicker than the carpet you are putting it on (doesn’t have to be drastically so, but at least a bit).
    • Don’t go too small. If your rug won’t fit at least a bit under 2 pieces, then you may as well lick a postage stamp, slap ‘er down and call it a day.
    • The long side of the rug should follow the longest piece of furniture. Now, sometimes this doesn’t work, but in the ideal world, you would have your longest piece of furniture line up with the long side of the rug.

    • Rug Styles. There are as many area rug styles as there are furniture styles, lighting styles, or room styles, meaning there's an almost unending variety of options.
    • Color. Color is a natural starting point when choosing an area rug. Obviously, you need to think about what colors you like and what colors you'd like to live with day in and day out, but that's not all.
    • Rug Patterns. Not everyone is enthusiastic about patterns, but if your furniture and walls are all solid colors, a patterned rug can really bring your room to life.
    • Area Rug Sizes. A rug that's too small for the room is one of the most common decorating mistakes. For most average-sized rooms, there should be about 10 to 20 inches of bare floor between the edges of the rug and the walls of the room.
  4. An area rug completes a room by: Anchoring furniture. Defining and tying together conversation areas, workspaces, and zones. Providing comfort underfoot. Adding texture, style, and pattern. Lightening up a dark room or warming up a sterile room. Area Rug Size Guide By Room.
