From 1858 to 1907 all coins minted for use in Canada were minted by the Royal Mint in London, England. If the London Mint facility was too busy to produce Canada's coins they transferred the production run to their mint in Heaton England.

The Royal Canadian Mint (French: Monnaie royale canadienne) is the mint of Canada and a Crown corporation, operating under the Royal Canadian Mint Act. The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown in right of Canada. The Mint produces all of Canada's circulation coins, [3] and manufactures circulation coins on behalf of other nations.

Coins were struck at the Royal Mint in London, and on occasion at the Heaton Mint. The Mint in Ottawa struck coinage for Newfoundland and Labrador during the First World War and Second World War and again in those years immediately preceding Newfoundland and Labrador’s entry into Confederation in 1949.
