Feb 1, 2022 · Frankly, the Unix workstation market was killed by Open Source: Linux and Free/Open/NetBSD. At a price tag of $8000-$35000 for a workstation (like an SGI Indy R10k) compared to commodity/surplus PC/AT with 386 or 486 they were suitable enough to run as a workstation.
Oct 19, 2020 · I scanned and attached some price lists, most are in 'Swiss Francs', some in German 'Deutsche Mark' before introduction of Euro. Price lists include SGI Hardware (Indy, Indigo2, O2) but also some software (mostly softimage) and bundles.

SGI produced a broad range of MIPS-based workstations and servers during the 1990s, running SGI's version of UNIX System V, now called IRIX. These included the massive Onyx visualization systems, the size of refrigerators and capable of supporting up to 64 processors while managing up to three streams of high resolution, fully realized 3D graphics.
For use as a graphics workstation, the Indigo was equipped with a two-dimensional framebuffer or, for use as a 3D graphics workstation, with the Elan graphics subsystem including one to four Geometry Engines (GEs). SGI sold a server version with no video adapter.
