After years of struggling with this, it's my belief that Apple's intended workaround for keyboard users with this problem is: Switch to "List View" (⌘2) when you need to see longer filenames. This habit requires an understanding of what folder will present itself.

May 13, 2020 · Go to the View menu and select "Show view options." A window opens up (like below) check the Show Item Info checkbox. Now folder icons will show the number of files in them for that window. Share.
