Iolanta (Ekaterina Scherbachenko) is a blind princess who is kept ignorant of her sightlessness. She lives in the forest and her father King Rene (Dimitry Ulyanov) threatens with death anyone who will disclose to Iolanta that she is blind.

Oct 15, 2012 · Iolanta is a one act lyric opera, sung in Russian, by Tchaikovsky. Performed in the style of a nineteenth-century Italian melodrama, the scenes have a recitative introduction followed by a single arioso, aria, duet or chorus.
Sellars, uncompromising as always, views each heroine in political-religious terms: Iolanta, the blind girl who wills herself to see so as to experience love, represents human striving towards God; Perséphone, descending to the underworld to relieve the suffering of its inhabitants, embodies belief in action.
Nov 16, 2012 · Famed stage director Peter Sellars gives us two rarely seen Russian masterpieces, Tchaikovsky's Iolanta and Stravinsky's Persephone. Unusual staging and lighting effects aside, these are well performed works and definitely worth a watch.
