Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto and Alliston Union Cemetery, Alliston, Ontario, I discovered the graves of the co-founders of Loblaw Groceterias, John Milton Cork and Theodore Loblaw. J. Milton Cork was born in Picton, Ontario and began working at his father’s grocery store on King Street East in downtown Toronto.

In 1919, Theodore Pringle Loblaw and J. Milton Cork opened the first Loblaw Groceterias store modelled on a new and radically different self-serve retail concept in Toronto. By 1928, the grocer had 69 stores across Ontario.
Loblaw was succeeded as president of the company by his friend and partner J. Milton Cork, while most of his shares ended up in a charitable trust. They would remain there until Willard Garfield Weston* acquired them following his purchase of Cork’s shares in 1947.
In 1897, Loblaw married Isabella Adam and in 1900 purchased his first grocery store on College Street with partner J. Milton Cork. Loblaw pioneered the concept of self-service grocery stores that provided all types of food products under one roof and opened the first Loblaw Groceteria in 1919.
