The Virginia State Capitol is the seat of state government of the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in Richmond, the state capital. It houses the oldest elected legislative body in North America, the Virginia General Assembly, first established as the House of Burgesses in 1619.
The guide was thoroughly knowledgeable about the history of the building and the Commonwealth of Virginia, and provided a thorough introduction to the space and to early Virginia history. Probably the best free tour that I have had anywhere. The building itself is gorgeous and worth a visit.

The building—along with two wings added in the twentieth century—continues to house the oldest elected legislative body in North America, the Virginia General Assembly, first established as the House of Burgesses in 1619.
The capitol's construction marked the first use anywhere in modern history of the temple form in a public building. Its awe-inspiring position on a hill overlooking the growing city and the untamed James River began a wave of temple-style public buildings that was to spread across the nation.
