- Walk the Halifax waterfront. As a historic port city, Halifax has always been tightly connected to its waterfront. But where it was once industrial and gritty, it’s now vibrant, bustling, and inviting.
- Lounge on the steps at Queen’s Marque. Sometimes, the simplest pleasures are the most appreciated. Queen’s Marque is the newest shopping and dining destination on the Halifax waterfront, and its massive granite steps—descending directly into the Halifax Harbour—have become a favourite stopping place for locals.
- Venture up Citadel Hill for the noon gun. Downtown Halifax is essentially built into the side of a steep hill, and overlooking it all is the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.
- Walk Spring Garden Road up to the Halifax Public Gardens. The Halifax Public Gardens is a beautiful and peaceful 16-acre Victorian-era public gardens formally established in 1867.

Being one of the oldest cities in Canada, Halifax has seen some things. From the harbour explosion that devastated the city to a pier that one in five Canadians can trace their roots to, there is much to see in historic Halifax. Thankfully, Halifax is incredibly walkable and you can cover many of its historical highlights in a day or two.
As noted, Halifax’s downtown core is incredibly walkable. You can cover much of its tourist highlights in a couple of days leaving the third free to explore its nearby gems.
With a record number of visitors year-after-year in Halifax and Nova Scotia, it should be no surprise that there are plenty of great accommodation and dining options in and around town. Here are a few of my Halifax highlights when it comes to eating, drinking, and sleeping it all off.

- Explore Halifax. With miles of waterfront and lots of historical sites, there’s plenty to see and do in Halifax. You could easily spend all three days in Halifax exploring the city and its many attractions, but we’ll start the first day off with a few that shouldn’t be missed.
- Pier 21 and Dartmouth. One of the top attractions in Halifax is a visit to the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, which is located at the end of Halifax’s waterfront boardwalk.
- Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. While there’s plenty more to do and see in the city, if you only have 3 days in Halifax, you need to get out and see some of the surrounding area as well!
Whether you’re just stopping through Halifax on a Canadian East Coast road trip or you’re on a cruise, there’s plenty to do, eat, see, and drink to fill your time! 24 hours in Halifax isn’t enough time to discover all the Canadian attractions this vibrant city offers.
