Italica (Spanish: Itálica) was an ancient Roman city in Hispania; its site is close to the town of Santiponce in the province of Seville, Spain. It was founded in 206 BC by Roman general Scipio as a colonia for his Italic veterans and named after them. [1]

Hispania Baetica, often abbreviated Baetica, was one of three Roman provinces created in Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula) on 27 BC. Baetica was bordered to the west by Lusitania, and to the northeast by Tarraconensis. Baetica remained one of the basic divisions of Hispania under the Visigoths.

Among the plethora of ancient treasures to be found in the region, I was particularly impressed by the incredible mosaics I came across.

Italica was the first city to be founded in Spain by the Romans being situated about six miles to the north of Hispalis (modern Seville) in the Guadalquivir valley. Geograhically, Italica lies close to the routes running from the mining zone in the Sierra Norte mountains.
