Dinah, the daughter of Leah whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her; and he abducted her, lay with her and afflicted her. (Genesis 34:1–2)
Dinah was the daughter of Leah, the unloved wife of the tribal leader Jacob. Jacob had always preferred his other wife Rachel, even though Leah seems to have been a loving wife and gave her husband many children. From the start, therefore, Dinah may have felt that she was unloved by her father, the very man who should have loved her.
