Jan 26, 2020 · 1. Château de Vincennes. Source: flickr. Château de Vincennes. You may recognise this monument by its formidable 52-metre 14th-century donjon, which has four circular turrets, arrow loops and crenellations, all defended by an outer walled enclosure and a deep, impassable moat.
It is particularly known for its "donjon" or keep, a fortified central tower, the tallest in Europe, built in the 14th century, and for the chapel, Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes, begun in 1379 but not completed until 1552, which is an exceptional example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture.

Château de Vincennes is one of the most interesting royal castles near Paris. This vast medieval fortress is located in the commune Vincennes, just out of Paris, and it is very easy to visit on a half-day trip from the French capital.
Since its construction in the 14th century on the orders of Charles V, the château de Vincennes is, with the Louvre, one of the most important castles in French history. Vincennes is also one of the largest and best conserved fortified castles in Europe.
