  1. Aug 25, 2020 · Using modeled global warming stabilization scenarios (from 1.5 to 6 °C warming), we project that the current sink of atmospheric C (0.10 ± 0.02 Pg C⋅y -1) in northern peatlands will shift to a C source as 0.8 to 1.9 million km 2 of permafrost-affected peatlands thaw. The projected thaw would cause peatland greenhouse gas emissions equal to ...

  2. Aug 25, 2020 · This study compiles over 7,000 field observations to present a data-driven map of northern peatlands and their carbon and nitrogen stocks. We use these maps to model the impact of permafrost thaw on peatlands and find that warming will likely shift the greenhouse gas balance of northern peatlands.

  3. Northern peatlands have accumulated large stocks of organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), but their spatial distribution and vulnerability to climate warming remain uncertain. Here, we used machine-learning techniques with extensive peat core data (n > 7,000) to create observation-based maps of northern peatland C and N stocks, and to assess their response to warming and permafrost thaw.

  4. A substantial portion of these carbon and nitrogen stocks are in peatlands affected by permafrost. The researchers estimated that at present, northern peatlands are a net sink of atmospheric ...

  5. Mar 14, 2022 · In vast areas of the northern permafrost zone, huge stocks of peat carbon have been protected ... of permafrost peatland thaw. ... of peatland carbon and nitrogen are vulnerable to permafrost thaw

  6. Aug 10, 2020 · The specific processes of peatland permafrost thaw we study here have been unaccounted for by previous spatial estimates of the permafrost carbon feedback. Our projected combined gaseous and aquatic C losses would add 30 to 50% onto previous spatially explicit estimates of permafrost-C losses under warming where abrupt thaw and peatland thaw was not quantified ( 10 , 14 ).

  8. Dec 7, 2020 · Here, we review the main agents of change of peatland C stocks and fluxes, including drivers that can induce rapid peatland C losses (peat fire, land-use change (LUC), and permafrost thaw) and ...
