A cidade de Santo Tirso foi o berço da industrialização do têxtil em Portugal. A fábrica Fiação e Tecidos Rio Vizela, fundada em 1845, nas freguesias de Vila das Aves e São Tomé de Negrelos, foi a primeira unidade do ramo no país, chegando também a ser maior fábrica portuguesa.
