On the death of Charles Frazer in 1832 Cunningham was offered the position of colonial botanist in New South Wales but declined it in favour of his younger brother, Richard, who had joined Aiton's staff at Kew about the same time as Allan, and was already familiar with his brother's collection of plants. Richard arrived in Sydney in February 1833 and was killed by Aboriginals in April 1835.
