      • When the Evening Telegram began publication on 3 April 1879, it marked the beginning of a permanent daily press in St. John's. There were eight other newspapers in the town at that time, but none published on a daily basis. The Telegram was established by local printer William James Herder, who had worked for The Courier until it folded in 1878.
