May Company California was established in 1923 when May acquired A. Hamburger & Sons Inc.. [ 2 ] (founded in 1881 by Asher Hamburger ). The company operated exclusively in Southern California until 1989 when May Department Stores had dissolved Goldwater's , based in Scottsdale, Arizona , and transferred its Las Vegas, Nevada store to May Company California.
The Kaufmann's chain dominated its local region, absorbing several other department stores including Strouss (1986) based in Youngstown, Ohio; Sibley's (1991) based in Rochester, New York; May Company Ohio (1992) based in Cleveland, Ohio (which had merged with O'Neil's (1989) in Akron, Ohio); and in 1995 the remnants of McCurdy's stores of Rochester and Hess's of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The store’s President Morton J. May, in September 1946, announced a merger with Kaufmann’s, a popular Pittsburgh-based department store chain. Combined sales figures in 1946-47 for both the May Company and Kaufmann’s equaled a whopping $246,354,000.

In the late 1950s, May Co. expanded into the Cleveland suburbs. By 1979 it had opened 9 branches in the Cleveland-Sandusky area. During the same period, the parent company in St. Louis expanded and diversified its holdings, acquiring department and discount store chains across the nation, including Pittsburgh's Kaufmann Department store chain in 1946.
