Kaufmann's was a department store that originated in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The store was owned in the early 20th century by Edgar J. Kaufmann, patron of the famous Fallingwater house. In the post-war years, the store became a regional chain in the eastern United States, and was last owned by Federated Department Stores.

Beginning in the 1950s, Kaufmann’s expanded and opened several branch locations. The chain was eventually acquired by Macy’s, and its flagship Pittsburgh store was rebranded. Over the years, its business lagged, losing market share to discount stores and competitors. In 2015, it closed its doors for good.

The downtown location, by then Macy’s, closed in 2015. The iconic clock remains.
Kaufmann’s merged with May Department Stores Co. of St. Louis in 1946, but E.J. remained president of the store. In 2005 Federated Department Stores bought May Co. for $11 billion. After Macy’s took over, lifelong Pittsburghers still called it Kaufmann’s even after its cluttered sales floors and spotty service made it unworthy of the name.

About Kaufmann’s Department Store. The earliest iteration of Kaufmann’s Department Store, J. Kaufmann & Brother, was founded in 1871 by German-Jewish immigrant brothers Jacob and Isaac Kaufmann. Their shop at 1916 Carson Street in Birmingham (now Pittsburgh’s South Side) offered tailoring and ready-to-wear men’s clothing.
