There is a legend, unfounded, that when Herbert Bayard Swope, Jr., was given his first toy by his father, to play with in his carriage, it was a tiny croquet mallet and ball. Whether this be true or not, young Swope began playing the game at his father's home in Great Neck at the age of nine.
Herbert Bayard Swope Sr. (/ ˈ b aɪ ɑːr d /; [1] January 5, 1882 – June 20, 1958) was an American editor, journalist and intimate of the Algonquin Round Table. Swope spent most of his career at the New York World. He was the first and three-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Reporting.
