Northup, a black man who was born free in New York state, details his being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South.
It recounts how Solomon Northup, born a free man in New York, was lured to Washington, D.C., in 1841 with the promise of fast money, then drugged and beaten and sold into slavery. He spent the next twelve years of his life in captivity on a Louisiana cotton plantation.
Solomon discovers that he has been kidnapped by a slave trader named James Burch, who beats Solomon every time he insists that he’s a free man. The slave dealer sends Solomon and other kidnapped men, women, and children to New Orleans by ship.
