99% of the time director's cuts are better. The biggest exceptions I know of are movies where the so-called director's cut isn't even the director's preferred version (Donnie Darko and Alien, for example). Occasionally you a true director's cut that is mind-boggling, like The Warriors, but that's extremely rare.
