Based on this methodology, DOER is using a projected propane price of $3.59/gallon in the 2023/24 winter season, compared to $3.54/gallon in the 2022/23 winter season. Off-season propane prices collected through SHOPP showed a decreasing trend in propane prices falling to $3.51/gallon as of October 2023.
The annual cost of natural gas heat is only $9.2 per million BTU compared to electric heat of $34.9 per million BTU. That means natural gas heat is less than 30%-40% the cost of electric heat. The reason is because natural gas furnaces pound for pound are more efficient in generating heat energy.
