Noyce also co-founded two companies that helped usher in the era of Silicon Valley—Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel. As a child growing up in Iowa, Noyce showed an early interest in tinkering and figuring out how things work.
This introductory chapter presents a brief background on Robert Noyce. Noyce was an Iowa-born physicist, a minister's son, and a former champion diver, with a doctorate from MIT. He invented the first practical integrated circuit in 1959; it was one of seventeen patents awarded to him.
