Jan 19, 2021 · It is with great sadness that the Department of History must announce that Professor and President Emeritus Jon Westling has died, his family reports. Professor Westling served as President of the University from 1996 to 2002, after which he joined the History Department. A longer statement on Professor Westling’s life and work is forthcoming.
BU President Emeritus Jon Westling (Hon.’03), 1942-2021: Westling came to the University in 1974 and his “career at BU spanned 46 years and included several top leadership posts, although his most lasting avocation was teaching students about the history of Europe,” says a BU Today article after he died. He was president of BU from 1996 to 2002 and continued to teach after stepping down.
