He studied in Berlin with Engelbert Humperdinck and he worked there for the cabaret "Schall und Rauch". There he met the actress Blandine Ebinger.

Erich Kästner bezeichnete sie 1928 als „eine unserer größten und modernsten Schauspielerinnen“ (vgl. Erich Kästner, in: „Vaführe mir liebers nicht“ CD-Booklet 1996). Polgar sah sie in einem Horváth-Stück auf der Bühne und fand sie „sanft und spitz“.
