Biographical Information: John Patrick Tully (1906-1987) was an oceanographer whose work in physical, chemical and biological oceanography heavily influenced the growth of oceanographic research on the West Coast of Canada. Tully was honoured with various awards, including the Order of Merit and the Commemorative Medal of Albert I of Monaco.
John Tully was an early advocate of rapid delivery of ocean data to meet the needs of various ocean users. He served as the first Chairman of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System, an international committee that was charged with the development and co-ordination of a system to collect and distribute oceanographic data in near real time.
John Tully, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and professor of physics and applied physics, received the 2020 Award in Chemical Sciences from the National Academy of Sciences. He is recognized for his pioneering contributions to theoretical chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations.
