Workman released his first instrumental "solo" album, Purple Passages, in 1996, and was well reviewed among musicians with XTC's Dave Gregory calling Workman "a musician of consummate skill, creativity and taste". His second solo album, Tabula Rasa (2001), has also received rave reviews.

Feb 19, 2021 · The lushness of the music on this album is not exactly a surprise, as it was something that was always intimated (and often achieved) on his three previous solo efforts—Purple Passages (Infrared,1996), Tabula Rasa (Infrared, 2001) and Harmonic Crusader (Infrared, 2009).

A GREAT song with strong vocals getting under my skin. Lyle had the masterful help of Mike Keneally, who also released it, on Wine and Pickles. I suspect the hand of Keneally also in the closing track Ithaca but maybe I'm just fooling myself. On average I would say that Pat Metheny give a better idea of what to expect on this album.

Aug 5, 2021 · His second record, Tabula Rasa, has more soundtrack-like elements, partially prompted by a move to Los Angeles. There he started working for a jingle company, gaining his first experience writing to pictures, but the record’s string arrangements recall cinema more than commercials.
