David Frederick Ley OC FRSC is a geographer and a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. Ley was born in Swansea, Wales, earned his B.A. at Oxford University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University.
Jan 4, 2023 · On December 29th 2022, Professor Emeritus David Ley was appointed to the Order of Canada for his ongoing and substantial contributions to the field of human geography. The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest honours.
Dr. Ley was Department Head (2009-2012). He was the first UBC Director of the Metropolis Project, examining issues of immigration and integration in Greater Vancouver and beyond, and has been appointed a Trudeau Fellow and also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada.

My principal focus has been the geography of older neighbourhoods of large cities and the social groups that experience them and attempt to shape them through changing social and political-economic contexts. My PhD research interpreted life in an impoverished African-American neighbourhood in inner city Philadelphia.
David J. Ley is a clinical psychologist and author, known for his critical stance regarding sex addiction. His first book, Insatiable Wives, won a Silver Medal in the Foreword Magazine Book of the Year in 2009.
