Harold Maurice Abrahams CBE (15 December 1899 – 14 January 1978) was an English track and field athlete. He was Olympic champion in 1924 in the 100 metres sprint , a feat depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire .
Abrahams and Liddell were rival sprinters who had made their names by winning a number of races back in the UK. Legend has it that they met once over 100m, with Liddell emerging the winner. The British duo were among the favourites for gold at the Paris Games, where they would come up against the USA’s fabled sprinting stars.
Harold Abrahams was a British athlete who won a gold medal in the 100-metre dash at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Abrahams was born into an athletic family; his older brother Sidney represented Great Britain in the Olympics in 1912.

Article History. The stories of British runners Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams are known to many through the 1981 Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire. As the movie tells it, Liddell was boarding a boat to the 1924 Paris Olympics when he discovered that the qualifying heats for his event, the 100-metre sprint, were scheduled for a Sunday.
