On February 3, 1959, a small plane crashed outside Mason City, Iowa, killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. (The Big Bopper) Richardson. Don McLean sang about that day in 'American Pie.' He called it the day the music died.
On February 2, 1959 at the Clear Lake, Iowa stop on the Winter Dance Party Tour, J.P. Richardson (known as "The Big Bopper") (Gailard Sartain), a disc jockey from Beaumont, Texas, performs his hit "Chantilly Lace". From backstage, Buddy calls Maria to check on her and her pregnancy.
