Maugham titled this novel after Dutch-Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza's Ethics book "Of Human Bondage or The Strength of the Emotions" which leads to "Of Human Freedom of the Control of the Understanding." The Modern Library ranked Of Human Bondage number 66 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
