American emigrant Howard Anderson (Tom Skerritt) is a partner in an ambitious project to build a holiday resort in the Blue Mountains of Australia. A week before Christmas (mid-summer in the Southern Hemisphere) a raging bush fire almost destroys the unfinished compound and only Anderson's foolhardy bravery keeps the flames at bay.
