May 6, 2019 · Captive could just as easily be a noun as is company. The phrases are entirely parallel. I think you could understand them as containing an ellipsis leaving out “as” plus a possessive pronoun: They were keeping her (as their) company. They were keeping him (as their) captive.

To me, the issue I see here is - the reader might be confused as to whether "a few days ago" was actually a few days ago of the event occurring OR a few days ago from when the author wrote the above sentence.
