And since he didn't kill anyone ever, as far as we know, he is also not an assassin by description, in my mind. He attempted an assassination but failed and still hasn't killed anyone.

The first means that Princip did not know that his assassination caused the war, at least not at the beginning but definitely after the assassination. While the second means that before the assassination (during his planning phase) he did not know or expect the result.
