Goddard Lieberson (April 5, 1911 – May 29, 1977) was the president of Columbia Records from 1956 to 1971, and again from 1973 to 1975. [1] He became president of the Recording Industry Association of America in 1964. [2]

Composer, author and recording executive Goddard Lieberson was educated at the University of Washington where he studied with George Frederick McKay, and with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music. He earned honorary degrees from Temple University and the Cleveland School of Music.

Under Lieberson’s leadership, the Columbia label soon dominated Broadway, recording some fifty-four shows over the span of his career, including twenty-three musical shows by 1959.

Lieberson led the industry in recording plays and the like, beginning with Paul Robeson in Othello in 1949 and including Hamlet with Richard Burton. His lists of 'musicals' credits include My Fair Lady, South Pacific, West Silk Story and the recent big successes, A Little Night Music and Billy.
