Gaius Pescennius Niger (c. 135 – 194) was a Roman usurper from 193 to 194 during the Year of the Five Emperors. He claimed the imperial throne in response to the murder of Pertinax and the elevation of Didius Julianus, but was defeated by a rival claimant, Septimius Severus, and killed while attempting to flee from Antioch.
Pescennius Niger was a senator and army officer who rebelled against Septimius Severus in 193. He was defeated and killed in 194 after a brief reign in the eastern provinces.

Gaius Pescennius Niger was born into an Italian equestrian family in about AD 135. Made a senator by Commodus, he campaigned against the Sarmatians in Dacia in AD 183, alongside Clodius Albinus. He performed well and was rewarded with the consulship. In AD 190 he was made governor of Syria.
The Battle of Issus was a decisive victory of Emperor Septimius Severus over his rival Pescennius Niger in AD 194. Niger was captured and killed after the battle, which took place near the site of Alexander the Great's victory over Darius III.
