May 9, 2012 · Known for his large-scale, back-lit photo-transparencies, his theoretical writing and his teaching, Jeff Wall is the best-known of a group of Vancouver artists, including Ken Lum, Ian Wallace and Rodney Graham, who have been associated with each other since the late 1960s.
Jeff Wall is best known for his large photographic transparencies back-lit in fluorescent light boxes. Responding to an era dominated by abstract art, he became interested in an alternative conceptual expression. He would reintroduce narrative and subject matter into the art world.
When Jeff Wall took this photograph in 1984, it was only seven years after his first ‘cinematographic’ pictures. The artist’s talent lies in his ability to capture this suddenness, suggesting that he was in the right place at the right time purely by coincidence.
