  1. Ernest I (German: Ernst Anton Karl Ludwig; 2 January 1784 – 29 January 1844) served as the last sovereign duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (as Ernest III) from 1806 to 1826 and the first sovereign duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 1826 to 1844.

As a result of this marriage Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Altenburg were unified, when the last duke of the line (Elisabeth's cousin) died childless in 1672. Ernst and Elisabeth Sophie had eighteen children:

He succeeded to the Duchy of Gotha in 1826, after his brother-in-law’s death, through his marriage to Louise Saxe-Gotha. They separated in 1824 and divorced in 1826.

  5. On July 3, 1817, Ernest married Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in Gotha. The couple had two children: their sons Ernest II Augustus Charles John Leopold Alexander Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and Francis Augustus Charles Albert Emmanuel (who is better known as Albert).
