John Sappington Marmaduke (March 14, 1833 – December 28, 1887) was an American politician and soldier. He was the 25th governor of Missouri from 1885 until his death in 1887. During the American Civil War, he was a senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded cavalry in the Trans-Mississippi Theater .
Born on March 14, 1833, near Arrow Rock, Missouri, John Sappington Marmaduke is the only Missouri governor whose father held the same position. The son of Meredith Miles Marmaduke and grandson of Dr. John S. Sappington, John grew up in one of Missouri’s most famous political families.

John Sappington Marmaduke graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1857 after attending both Harvard and Yale. Marmaduke briefly served with the United States Army during the Utah War before resigning his commission upon the outbreak of the Civil War.
