Princess Mombi is the secondary antagonist of the 1985 movie Return to Oz. She is based on an amalgam of two characters from L. Frank Baum's Oz books - Mombi, the Wicked Witch of the North from The Marvelous Land of Oz and Princess Langwidere from Ozma of Oz.
- PRINCESS MOMBI’S CASTLE. Ask anyone who grew up on Return to Oz and they’ll likely have the same vote for the scariest scene. It’s hard to top the sequence in Mombi’s castle.
- THE WHEELERS. As a kid, I had to look away every time the Wheelers were on screen, Who on earth conceived the design of these creepers? The faces on the helmets are so scary it’s unreal, and their animalistic barking and menacing laughter is almost worse.
- THE DEATH OF THE NOME KING. Everything about this sequence is horrifying (imagine little children watching this!) from the rock creatures poking through the walls, to the Nome King’s enormous hands, to Jack Pumpkinhead’s near-death experience.
- ELECTROSHOCK THERAPY. The implications of this scene are frightening. Seeing a tiny Fairuza Balk â with her innocent plaits and country-girl dress â strapped to a machine that is about to send shock-waves through her brain, all because of her stories of a land where people loved and listened to her, is heartbreaking.

Jun 11, 2021 · Dorothy manages to steal the powder of life, but she accidentally wakes Mombi’s original head (which looks just like Nurse Wilson) along with all the other heads and Mombi’s headless body. Dorothy sees a ghostly figure behind a mirror that points out an exit to her.

Apr 1, 2019 · All of the many heads are fast asleep. The moment Dorothy unlocks the cabinet at the end to retrieve the Powder, she's startled to find Mombi's original head hidden inside. The head wakes up, alerting the other heads with her guttural yelling, which in turn wakes Mombi's body. And cue the headless body chasing after Dorothy. WTF.
