Jan 24, 2022 · The Legend of Hillbilly John. 1974. ★★★½. Watched Jan 24 , 2022. When it comes to folk horror, it was never done better than in the 1970s. That era, just post-hippie, had such a palpable aesthetic that lent itself so well to anything folksy. And man, is this folksy!

Based on the pulp writer Manly Wade Wellman's "Silver John" series of short stories about a wandering troubadour who fights the devil in Appalachia. Wellman was part of the Weird Tales crew and August Derleth was one of the first to promote and compile his stories, just as he did for H.P. Lovecraft.
