Located on the Toronto waterfront, Tommy Thompson Park is a unique urban wilderness minutes from downtown. The park is located on a man-made peninsula, known as the Leslie Street Spit, which extends five kilometres into Lake Ontario and is over 500 hectares in size.
The park is named in honour of Toronto’s first Commissioner of Parks, Tommy Thompson. He was influential in the design and development of Toronto Island Park and worked to protect Toronto’s ravines by keeping them as “wild” as possible.

Tommy Thompson was Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the City of Port Arthur from 1946 to 1951. He returned to Toronto to become the Adviser on Parks and Recreation Facilities in the Community Services Branch of the Ontario Department of Education in 1951.
